What are hydraulic turbines?

Hydroelectric generating plant

Hydroelectric Generating Plants are hydroelectric plants of even smaller size and power than PCHs. According to the classification of the National Electric Energy Agency, these projects can have the potential to generate from 0 up to 5 megawatts (MW) of energy.

Small hydroelectric power station (SHP)

Small Hydroelectric Power Plants (SHPS) are hydroelectric plants of relatively small size and power. These plants produce between 5 and 30 megawatts (MW) of energy per hour with power and must have less than 13 km² of reservoir area.

Hydroelectric power plant (HPP)

The Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPP) are large hydroelectric plants, that is, with the capacity to produce more than 30 megawatts (MW) of energy per hour and with flooded areas for a reservoir of more than 13km².

Types of hydraulic turbines

There are three types of hydraulic turbines that must be installed for the best use of the water course, its volume and the difference in altitude of the dam:

1. Francis Hydraulic Turbine

Created by the French engineer James B. Francis in 1848, it’s the most used type for altitude differences from 10 meters to 400 meters, whose water flow is from two meters to 100 cubic meters per second. Its operation allows water to reach the Impeller in a spiral duct. The fixed part directs the water to the Wheel's propellers.

2. Pelton Hydraulic Turbine

Created by the American carpenter and inventor Lester A. Pelton in 1879. It was “inspired” by the operating system of the mills. This type of hydroelectric turbine is used for situations where the height difference is between 300 meters and 1,400 meters and where the water flow is less than 50 cubic meters per second.

3. Kaplan Hydraulic Turbine

Developed by an Austrian professor named Viktor Kaplan in 1913, it’s also inspired by another existing and widely used equipment at the time: the ship's propellers. As it’s designed differently from the previous ones, it allows its performance to be improved, when applied in plants with a small difference in altitude and with flows above 200 cubic meters per second.
